This is a design by Naomi. She wanted a broken tile pattern to transition from an existing floor to an addition. Instead of doing random broken pieces she put tiles in a towel before breaking them. This left the pieces in their original position. So, it becomes a broken pattern with matching joints, which gives you the impression of an "exploded view schematic".
